About George’s Gift
From my earliest memories, animals have been at the center of my life. I rescued neighborhood wildlife from prowling cats, stopped to greet every dog I passed, and—like so many children—begged my parents for a companion of my own (sorry, Mom and Dad!).
As an adult, I finally welcomed my first four-legged companion into my home. George changed my life in ways I could never have imagined. He is my hiking partner, my brewery patio pal, my quiet confidant, and my very best friend. Loving him has been one of the greatest gifts of my life.
While building a career in the financial sector, my concern for the well-being of all beings—human and other-than-human—never left me. I advocated for animal welfare at local City Council meetings, built dog houses for animals in need, fostered puppies, and helped rescue injured wildlife. Yet I continued to feel called toward a path more deeply rooted in interspecies care and connection.
When I discovered Animal and Veterinary Chaplaincy, I felt an immediate and unmistakable sense of calling. By a meaningful coincidence, my first class took place on George’s birthday—it felt like a sign that I was exactly where I needed to be.
During my training, George was diagnosed with an inoperable meningioma brain tumor. The news was devastating. While I would give anything to change that diagnosis, the experience profoundly shaped my understanding of the challenges faced by caregivers and veterinary professionals alike. I witnessed firsthand the emotional weight of navigating complex medical decisions, the tension between advancing treatment options and financial realities, and the heartbreaking responsibility of making choices for a beloved companion. Most of all, I saw how deeply these journeys affect the animals at the center of it all.
Out of this lived experience, George’s Gift Animal and Veterinary Chaplaincy was born. Its mission is to offer compassionate presence and emotional support to caregivers, veterinary teams, and animal companions—honoring both the joys and the profound challenges of our interconnected lives.
